Hazardous Locations Equipment Certification

Targeted support

Without the proper support and experience in your corner, navigating product certifications and regulations for global markets may seem like penetrating a brick wall. The whole process can be time consuming and challenging. Knowledge of the proper standards and requirements takes time to master. You wouldn’t go to court without an experienced lawyer, so don’t enter the world of product certification without someone on your side. Someone who has the experience needed to be your advocate and help you to navigate the process.

TLW Technologies has practical experience in various types of product certification and is able to support your product certification from concept to production. Having experience in both general product certification and product certification for Hazardous Locations, you can count on TLW Technologies for US, Canadian, and global markets including the European Union.

General Product Safety

Many types of equipment or products require general product safety certification to various national and international standards. These standards help to assure the product is generally safe for use by having specific requirements for protection against fire, electrical shock, sharp edges, hazardous materials, and many other potential risks. The list of these types of product safety standards is as varied as the many different types of products that exist. It is imperative to select the proper safety standards for the type of product and region it is intended to be sold.

To get through this process easily, support starting early and going through the development process is needed to avoid challenges or redesigns at the end of the development process. By leveraging the expertise at TLW Technologies, your staff can focus on their design efforts knowing that the standards requirements are being properly attended to. While we can offer support and guidance on a wide range of standards, we have enhanced experience with the following general product safety standards:

  • UL/EN/IEC 61010-1- Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment For Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use.
  • IEC 60529 – Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosure
  • UL50/50E – Enclosures for Electrical Equipment
  • UL/EN/IEC 62368-1 – Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology Equipment
  • UL 3100 – Automated Mobile Platforms (AMPs)
  • UL 6200 – Controllers for Use in Power Production
  • UL 2200 – Stationary Engine Generator Assemblies
  • ISO 12100 – Safety of Machinery – General Principles for Design, Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction

Hazardous Locations Product Safety

Equipment designed for use in hazardous (classified) locations also known as hazardous areas requires compliance to one or more specialized product safety standards. For many countries or regions this is in addition to the general product safety requirements. If you are looking to develop a product for use in hazardous (classified) locations, experience and knowledge of these standards and possible quality systems is needed. Without proper knowledge and support, your development project is likely at risk of delays and redesigns.

While TLW has expertise with many protection concepts (see list below), TLW is specifically positioned to support the protection method of Intrinsic Safety. This protection method ties very closely to the electrical/electronic design of your equipment. Knowledge of both the standard and electrical/electronic design is key for quality support when it comes to this protection concept. TLW is positioned uniquely to support this because we understand and have expertise in both aspects. Not only can we help to analyze the design to assure compliance to intrinsic safety with our extensive and detailed knowledge of the standard requirements, we can also work with you to develop a circuit design pulling from our over 3 decades of experience with electrical/electronic design. This combination assures your design will function as you need while also being compliant to the design requirements for intrinsic safety. This strong combination of circuit design and standard compliance is a specific strength that TLW can provide. If you are looking for support for your next intrinsic safety product design, look no further.

TLW Technologies has both the experience and expertise you can trust with several protection concepts and the standards that go along with them for global access, providing you with the support needed for successful product certification.

As an example of our expertise, below is a partial list of the standards we have worked with:

  • IEC 60079-0 – General requirements
  • IEC 60079-1 – Equipment Protection by Flameproof Enclosure “d”
  • IEC 60079-2 – Equipment Protection by Pressurized Enclosure “p”
  • IEC 60079-5 – Equipment Protection by Powder Filling “q”
  • IEC 60079-7 – Equipment Protection by Increased Safety “e”
  • IEC 60079-11 – Equipment Protection by Intrinsic safety “i”
  • IEC 60079-15 – Equipment Protection by Type of Protection “n”
  • IEC 60079-25 – Intrinsically Safe Electrical Systems
  • IEC 60079-31 – Equipment Dust Ignition Protection by Enclosure “t”
  • IEC 60079-42 – Electrical Safety Devices for the Control of Potential Ignition Sources for Ex-Equipment
  • ISO 80079-36 – Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres – Basic method and requirements
  • UL121201/CSA 22.2 No. 213 – Nonincendive for Class/Division
  • NFPA 30B – Code for the Manufacture and Storage of Aerosol Products
  • NFPA 70 – National Electrical Code (Specifically Article 5 for hazardous (classified) locations)

In addition to the IEC standards identified above, we also have experience with the national adoptions of these for the US, Canada and EU. We also have experience with other FM, UL and CSA standards related to hazardous locations not listed. You can rely on TLW Technologies for all of your hazardous location certification needs.
